Statement
Born and raised in the San Diego and Tijuana region, Daniel Barron-Corrales was constantly exposed to these two disparately different environments. This bi-national upbringing sparked Barron-Corrales’s curiosity to engage with polar themes, such as life/death, work/play, ability/dis-ability, masculinity/femininity; in an attempt to decode the common ground between these formative places, and these beautiful dichotomies. In taking found objects from both sides of the border, he excavates the personal and cultural meanings behind these discarded materials. Working in sculpture, installation, performance, and video, Barron-Corrales combines these disparate cultural references to produce works that embody the process of their creation while defamiliarizing the elements that compose them. The final works are meant to suggest some insight embedded in the strata of culture, its artifacts, and their everyday conditions.
